Fashion giant River Island was to open a major 18,135 sq ft store in Cardiff at St David’s shopping centre and required a bespoke, DDA compliant vertical glass lift to access the second floor.
The aim was to provide access for both shoppers and staff. The lift, not only needed to be functional but design led to compliment the modern and contemporary interior of the store.
The store itself was to have a front glass façade and mezzanine style second floor. Access to the higher level was achieved via a large staircase, the lift was to be positioned in free-standing steel structure to the right of the main stairs.
As with many modern retail store build and refurbishments the lift installation needed to simple with the minimum amount of construction work. A pit less, free standing platform lift solution was required.
Axess 2 had the ideal product, the Leonardo, a low energy, environmentally friendly electric traction platform lift.
We designed the lift car with light and space in mind, glass was the material of choice for the two side walls whilst a powder coated durable steel skinplate was selected from our range for the back wall. To maximize the space in the cabin, the floor designation buttons and display were installed in a central wall mounted operating panel. Twin mirrors and a brushed stainless steel handrail were added to the lift car to compliment the modern and contemporary feel.
The lift featured automatic telescopic doors with integrated glass panels finished in a bespoke colour selected by River Island to blend seamlessly with interior design of the store.
The free standing lift structure, also finished in the same bespoke colour was then clad externally right the way up the entire lift shaft with glass panels, fixed in position modern stainless steel fixings.
