BUILDING CONTRACTORS: BUILDING AN EXCELLENT RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR CLIENT

As a building contractor, it’s essential that you build up a fantastic working relationship with the people who you are carrying out work for. You want the job to go as smoothly as possible; from the very beginning until completion. The best way to ensure that everything flows properly is to make sure that you and your client have good communication.

The success of a project is often the responsibility of the contractor, but there also needs to be good cooperation between you and the client. This means problems and issues will be able to be resolved as swiftly and efficiently as possible.

So how can you build up an excellent relationship with your clients?

REGULAR COMMUNICATION

Communication is essentially the most important part of building and maintaining an excellent relationship with your clients. This is crucial in making sure that the project is completed to the highest standards.

It doesn’t just start after names are signed on dotted lines; it begins from the very first conversation. You need to have a clear understanding of the project and what is being expected from you and your team. If your client isn’t being forthcoming with their wishes, it’s up to you to open up the line of communication as much as possible.

MAKE A PLAN & FOLLOW THE AGREED WORK SCHEDULE

Before beginning any work, you should sit down with your client and put together a detailed plan. This should include all expectations, a thorough time frame that highlights any potential reasons why it could take longer, and a rundown of all costs involved.

As a building contractor, it’s important that you stick to your agreed work schedule. This is the time frame in which you have promised the client that the work will be completed. Not sticking to this could cause a breakdown in your relationship.

YOU SHOULD BE ACCESSIBLE & APPROACHABLE

Your client needs to know that you’re available to be contacted in the times in which you’ve promised to be around.  When it comes to big projects, people often have lots of questions and enquiries, which makes it even more important that you’re accessible whenever possible.

You should also be approachable. As their building contractor, your clients need to know that they can come to you with any concerns or questions and that they will get an honest answer.

The success of a project is definitely determined by the working relationship between contractor and client. Therefore it’s important that both parties play their role in making sure that everything runs smoothly.
