Platform Lifts

Platform lifts might not be the most well known in the world of lifts, but chances are you have come across one simply without realising it. The term platform lift is an umbrella term, covering many different types of lifting systems including step lifts, incline lifts, pitless lifts and screw lifts to name a few!
Platform lifts are essentially exactly what they sound like and are something which is very closely connected to disabled access and disabled lifts. Platform lifts can be used in the home or for public access and they basically consist of a platform which is raised up and lowered down by the power of hydraulics or traction system; this is where they differ from a normal passenger lift which has an entire car which travels up and down a lift shaft. That said, the Machinery Directive Platform Lifts like the Leonardo and Meta 500 have more in common with a traditional passenger lift, for example they have enclosed cabins and automatic sliding telescopic doors.
Platform lifts have grown in popularity since the laws about equal access for disabled people came into force. They are much quicker and easier to use than a traditional stair or chair lifts, as they do not require the passenger to leave their wheelchair. Many platform lifts are also built to accommodate an accompanying adult, the lift usually has platform size of 1400x1100mm to comply with DDA and part M of Building Regulations.
Many different people are having platform lifts installed in their homes, permanent wheelchair users, people who struggle with steps and stairs and others who are simply future proofing their homes. Platform lifts are controlled by the person who is using them, this means that, should physical mobility permit, the user can control where they go and when they go, enabling independence around their home.
